According to the publication, the leak affected a special application used by Volkswagen electric vehicle drivers. In total, several terabytes of contact information of car owners were leaked into the network, as well as information about the movement of vehicles in several countries, including Germany, Norway, Sweden and the UK.
Der Spiegel noted that information about electric vehicle drivers, including German politicians, businessmen, police officers and intelligence officers, had been stored in Amazon’s cloud storage without proper protection for several months.
The leak occurred because Cariad, a subsidiary of Volkswagen created to develop a platform for all of the automaker’s electric vehicles, made a mistake, the magazine writes. After the German hacker community Chaos Computer Club contacted Cariad, access to the data was closed.
Cariad Der Spiegel said customers “do not need to take any action” as sensitive data such as passwords or payment details were not affected in the breach. The company added that the collected information was used to improve the performance of batteries and related software.
