David Popovici had an appropriate reaction when asked if he will enter politics in the future.
David Popovich is one of the representative figures of Romanian sport at the moment, after winning two medals at the Olympic Games in Paris. The swimmer triumphed in the 200-meter freestyle, where he won the gold medal, and in the 100-meter freestyle he won the bronze medal. The 20-year-old athlete commented on his possible involvement in politics in the future and gave an honest answer.
David Popovici, overflowingly honest answer about his appearance on the political scene in Romania
Popovici spoke openly about his intentions to enter politics, after criticizing the authorities for the lack of sports infrastructure on several occasions. Thus, the Olympic champion from Paris said that he does not want to get involved in politics, even after he retires from sports.
I haven’t thought much about it, but if I had to imagine this scenario, I think I wouldn’t be “suited for the job”. In many countries but also in Romania, in order to reach certain positions you have to give up the principles and certain values you had in the past.
I think that the principles that I am defending now would not be in accordance with …. Then maybe yes (not if he would consider running as an independent candidate), but it is so difficult to be truly independent in Romania, it seems almost impossible
There would be so many obstacles that you would come to the conclusion that you can’t get anywhere”, specified David Popovici, at M.C.N. Podcast.
David Popovici said that he could not invite Zhanle Pan to train in Romania
Moreover, the swimmer specified, in the same podcast, that he would not be able to launch them in the future an invitation to Zhanle Pan to train next to him in Romania, because the Chinese athlete would say that he would make fun of him, because of the poor quality of the infrastructure.
“If I brought my opponents or my friends from other countries on a visit or to a training camp, to train with me at Lia Manoliu, they would say I’m making fun of them. He would say: “No, no, it’s a joke, take us where you train”. I’m sure they wouldn’t believe me.
That’s why I and too few athletes are in this position of champions and very good at sports, that’s why there aren’t more of us.
Because we don’t have a real strategy for sports in Romania and we don’t have such a great interest of politicians in sports.
There should be, in my opinion, much more interest in this. There are so many things that can be done differently
Given that, at Lia Manoliu, 3-4 months a year, as long as it’s cold, an improvised balloon is put over the pool and everyone coughs their lungs out because there is way too much chlorine and there is not a very good system of ventilation.
Given that I don’t have a suitable gym inside the complex where I can train, a strength gym, physical training on land.
In the conditions in which I cannot receive such a hall, it does not matter who I am or what I have achieved, it is no wonder that people in my position reach so rarely”, Popovici also said, according to the previously mentioned source.
