DEATH – A very great among the greats has just passed away: the genius filmmaker David Lynch has died at the age of 78, his family announced in a press release published on his official Facebook page this Thursday, January 16.

« It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and artist, David Lynch (…) There is a great void in the world now that he is no longer with us . But, as he said, “keep your eye on the donut and not the hole”, we can read on the Facebook post, concluded with this poetic sentence: “ It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way ».

Although the causes of his death have not been specified, we know that the American director was ill. On August 5, he confirmed that he was suffering from emphysema, a lung disease as a direct result of ” years of smoking “. But the filmmaker wanted to reassure his fans by affirming that he would not take “ never retire ».

David Lynch is particularly known for his famous films Twin Peaks et Mulholland Drive, but also Elephant Man or even Dune (1984).

Director of ten feature films, all cult, released between 1977 and 2006, the filmmaker was nominated for an Oscar for Elephant Man (1980), Blue Velvet (1986) et Mulholland Drive (2001). He received an honorary Oscar in 2019 for his entire filmography.

All his films are imbued with his inimitable touch, between strangeness, surrealism and dreamlikeness, all in a disturbing atmosphere which fascinated his admirers. He even developed his own cinematic style, the style « lynch ».

From the black and white zombie story Erasehead (1977), his first feature film financed by odd jobs, one of his consecrations with Sailor et Lula (1990), Palme d’Or at Cannes, most of his works have become cult. Another masterpiece for critics, Elephant Man (1980), moving film about a deformed creature from Victorian England.

In 1990, he created Twin Peaksa legendary series that revolutionizes the genre and transforms millions of viewers into detectives haunted by the mysteries it unravels over two seasons. A quarter of a century later, he did it again with Twin Peaks : The Return (2017).
