SARAJEVO, BANJALUKA – The export of electricity from Bosnia and Herzegovina has more than doubled this year, according to official data from the BiH Agency for Statistics.
We would like to remind you that last year electricity was the most demanded product from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and more than one billion KM was earned from the export of electricity.
Let’s go back to the current data, which are very worrying.
In six months of this year, the export of electricity amounted to 289,309,305 KM, while in the same period last year the state earned drastically more money from electricity, 671,284,530 KM.
This means that exports are lower by almost 390 million KM.
On the other hand, the import of electricity in six months of this year also recorded a decline.
Electricity came for 78,756,467 KM, and in six months last year for 140,522,349 KM.
Edhem Bičakčić, president of the Regional Branch of the International Council for Large Electric Systems (SEERC), explains to “Independent newspaper” the reasons for such a drastic drop in exports.
“The biggest reason is the failure of thermal power plant production in ‘Elektroprivreda’ from Sarajevo due to the lack of coal. Coal production in the mines of “Elektroprivreda BiH” in the last four years has been reduced from six million tons to three, which means it has doubled. Now rehabilitation efforts are being made and additional quantities are being purchased at higher prices. The lack of coal has been reduced in production considering that 60 percent of production is from coal in thermal power plants. Another reason is slightly worse hydrology compared to the previous year, which was extremely hydrologically favorable. I think that ‘Elektroprivreda’ in Trebinje has minor problems with coal, and that Ugljevik and Gacko are properly supplied, although I am not completely sure of that. What is achieved in export is achieved by independent electricity producers, primarily Tenants and newer solar capacities”. Bičakčić stated.
When asked whether the stabilization of electricity prices on the market and weaker demand had an impact on lower exports, Bičakčić replied that the price of electricity dropped significantly.
“For example, two years ago the price was 0.37 to 0.40 KM per kilowatt-hour. Last year it was from 0.20 to 0.25 KM per kilowatt-hour, and this year it is 0.12 to 0.16 KM. These are the net prices received by producers from renewable sources. In the first half of this year, the physical volume of exports amounted to 4.1 terawatt-hours (TWh), which is four percent less than in the same period of the previous year. The physical volume of net export in the first half of this year amounted to 1.3 TWh, which represents a decrease of 45 percent, while from a financial point of view, net export was 204 million KM, which is 61 percent lower. The reason for the smaller financial effects of exports is the reduced export volumes and increased import volumes by 49 percent, but also the lower price of electricity on the stock exchanges compared to last year in the same period.”, Bičakčić concluded.
