The National Federation of Doctors (FNAM) has denounced “delays and irregularities” in the competitions and hiring of doctors, warning that half a year after 1,350 doctors completed their training, only 400 have been placed in the National Health Service (NHS). “Ana Paula Martins’ Ministry of Health unilaterally decided to change the rules of the competitions, and as FNAM had warned, this resulted in an unacceptable delay in the hiring of specialists”, the union highlights.
The president of Fnam, Joana Bordalo e Sá, said that the “worst delays” are in the placement of specialists in General and Family Medicine, “one of the specialties most lacking in the NHS” and which means that almost 1.7 million users do not have a family doctor. Joana Bordalo e Sá also said that Fnam is advising doctors to hand over disclaimers “to guarantee their own safety and the safety of patients and users”.
The director argues that the emergency room closure situation could worsen as doctors reach their overtime limit, recalling that there is a strike on the 24th and 25th.
