This Sunday many citizens take to the streets to protest for one dwelling impossible to pay in many cities. In the last decade, rental prices in Spain have risen more than 80 percent. In some cities it has doubled, while salaries have grown three times less.

40 groups and associations are asking for a drastic reduction in housing rents and are considering a tenant strike as Silvia López reports.

The Madrid Tenants Union asks to go on a rent strike

He Union of Residents and Tenants of Madrid asked this Sunday during his participation in the demonstration for housing called in the capital “walk” towards the rent strike.

The union spokesperson, Valeria Racu, has threatened both the landlords and the real estate employers with stop paying rent if prices continue to rise. Racu has warned that “there will not be enough police or thugs” to stop all the people who have come to the mobilization today for this purpose.

The objective of the strike, according to Racu, is lower rents by 50%. To do this, they ask that the action be repeated in all the neighborhoods of Spain, starting to organize from this Monday, October 14.
