During this summer’s EC football final round, Nico Williams had his major international breakthrough.
The winger was one of the revelations in the Spanish team that won the championship, but the Danish defense will not try to rein him in on Saturday’s meeting in the Nations League.
22-year-old Williams has canceled the matches against Denmark and Serbia due to an injury, the Spanish Football Association informs in a post on X.
Nico Williams, who plays daily for Athletic Club in Bilbao, managed to attend the national team camp in Las Rozas, but after consultation with the doctors he left again.
“Nico Williams has been taken out of the national team camp after feeling some physical discomfort and will not be available for the third and fourth Nations League games in Murcia and Cordoba respectively,” reads the announcement.
Williams has been replaced by Real Sociedad’s Sergio Gómez.
Spain have picked up four points in their first two games in the Nations League.
After 0-0 against Serbia, the Spaniards won 4-1 in Switzerland and now face Denmark, who have maximum points.
The teams are fighting for the two places that give access to next year’s play-offs in the relatively new tournament.
