The government donates DKK 75 million to Palestinians in Gaza.
It is happening on top of the ceasefire between Israel and the militant organization Hamas, which came into being on Wednesday.
– The truce between Israel and Hamas has ignited new hope. Our new contribution must go to urgent and life-saving efforts for the severely tested civilian population in Gaza and support early reconstruction to the extent possible, here in the first phases of the ceasefire, says Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen (M) to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website.
– A new momentum has been created, which we are ready to seize on the Danish side, and which can hopefully lead to lasting peace. My journey in the Middle East in the last few days has only confirmed this for me, he says.
The new contribution comes on top of the approximately DKK 700 million that Denmark has provided since 2023 in humanitarian support during the crisis.
The reports of an agreement on a ceasefire came on Wednesday evening after several months of negotiations, in which Qatar, Egypt and the United States have acted as mediators.
From the US, both the sitting president, Joe Biden, and the future president, Donald Trump, have been involved.
There has been a war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas for about 15 months.
According to Qatar’s prime minister, the ceasefire is to take effect on January 19 and is expected to begin with an initial ceasefire phase of six weeks.
However, there has been no final confirmation from the Israeli government.
Israel’s prime minister’s office has said there are points in the Gaza deal that are unresolved. The Israeli government and security cabinet will vote on the deal on Thursday, an Israeli official said, according to Reuters.
