No country has an ambitious enough climate policy to be awarded first, second or third place in global climate policy.
But right after that is Denmark.
As number four, Denmark is placed in the highest place on the recognized ranking of countries’ climate efforts Climate Change Performance Index.
It will be presented on Wednesday at the COP29 climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The ranking is mainly due to the share of green energy in the Danish energy systems, the amount of greenhouse gas emissions and the organization of the Danish climate policy.
However, Denmark receives a note for our energy consumption, which is high and could be more efficient.
The think tanks New Climate Institute, Germanwatch and Climate Action Network, which are behind the work on the ranking list, take note of several elements in the Danish climate policy – which, however, have so far only been agreed upon and not completed.
The adoption of the world’s first greenhouse gas on agriculture and animal production is praised.
It was a clear minus in last year’s report that Denmark had not yet dealt with agricultural emissions.
In addition, the think tanks note that the SVM government has announced new climate targets, where Denmark must be climate neutral in 2045 and in 2050 absorb more CO2 than it has emitted. However, the targets have not yet been adopted and written into the Danish Climate Act.
Great importance is also attached to Denmark’s role in international climate diplomacy.
In recent years, Denmark has assumed a facilitating role in the international climate negotiations, especially at the COP29 climate summit.
– Denmark has invested massively in the international climate debate and has taken a central position due to both diplomacy and political positions, reads the report.
Recently, several international observers have feared that climate policy could fade into the background due to wars and crises. Even Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has noticed the global development.
The think tanks note that this must not happen to Denmark.
– Denmark now has the challenge of maintaining its existing level of engagement, strong positions and proactive role in further international negotiations and discussions, it reads.
After Denmark, the Netherlands and Great Britain are in the next places at the top of the ranking. Both countries are high jumpers compared to last year, and especially Great Britain under the new Labor government has moved forward in the bus in the eyes of the think tanks.
At the opposite end of the list are Iran and Saudi Arabia as bottom-scrapers.
