Deputy US Ambassador to Latvia D. Jacoby visited the Augsdaugava region

Chairman of the Augshdaugava Regional Duma Arvid Kucins drew attention to important aspects of the functioning of the region, for example, its location near the external border of the European Union, which creates serious challenges. The influence of the ethnic composition of the population and the languages used in everyday life on cultural and political processes was discussed.

D. Jacoby was also interested in the reaction of residents to the recent arrival of a Russian drone on the territory of Latvia.

The conversation was held around the economic and infrastructural development of the region, and the problems of population decline and the country’s security were considered. The meeting participants came to the conclusion that the economic security of the population is one of the foundations of state security, and self-government should take care of this aspect.

Ms. Jacoby arrived in Latvia in September 2023 and previously served as a political and economic adviser at the US Embassy in Antananarivo, Madagascar. During her more than 20-year career as a diplomat, D. Jacoby worked in Greece, Israel, Germany and Austria, and before that she was a State Department official in Washington. The US Deputy Ambassador speaks French, German, Hebrew and Latvian, which was a real surprise for the hosts of the meeting.

Mrs. Jacobi expressed a desire to revisit the Augšdaugava region to get acquainted with interesting places and enterprises, for example, the quail farm SIA Eka Paipalas.
