Serbian supporters booed the “Helvetii” anthem and displayed an anti-Kosovo banner. The unions of Hungary and Bosnia and Herzegovina were also punished for the fans’ racist and discriminatory chanting.
UEFA has rules against political banners in stadiums. She accused Serbia of “broadcasting a message that is not suitable for a sporting event”.
The Serbs must also serve a two-year probationary period and, in the event of a repeat offence, UEFA will close part of the stadium for a home match.
Meetings between Serbia and Switzerland have had a political charge in recent years. Swiss captain Granit Xhaka has Albanian family ties to Kosovo, whose independence Serbia does not recognize.
The Hungarian federation, on the other hand, cannot sell tickets to its supporters for the match in the Netherlands. UEFA also fined the Hungarians 20,000 euros for discrimination and 14,500 euros for using fireworks.
The Bosnian association must close part of the stadium during the match against “Oranjes” and pay 25,000 euros.
