Unlike ARD and ZDF, Deutsche Welle is not financed by broadcasting fees, but by federal tax revenue. More money is now to be allocated in the budget for the international broadcaster.

Deutsche Welle (DW) is expected to receive more money in the new federal budget for 2025. Additional funds of 25 million euros are planned compared to the financial planning, according to the office of Minister of State for Media Claudia Roth (Greens). Unlike ARD, ZDF and Deutschlandradio, the German international broadcaster is not financed with broadcasting fees, but with tax revenue.

The Federal Cabinet approved the draft federal budget for 2025, which can now be forwarded to the Bundestag. The budget decision is scheduled for the end of November.

25 million more Deutsche Welle from 2025

Deutsche Welle says that the government’s draft budget provides an additional 15 million euros for the broadcaster compared to the current year, which is around 25 million euros more than the medium-term financial planning. DW is a public broadcaster. In 2024, it will receive a subsidy of around 410 million euros from the budget of Minister of State for Media Roth. Most recently, there was an austerity program with job cuts at the company with its German headquarters in Berlin and Bonn.

With regard to the budget surplus, Deutsche Welle spoke of structural stabilization for the company. For example, collective bargaining negotiations are currently underway for the approximately 3,800 permanent and freelance employees.
