DHB Cup: Close victory at HSV – THW Kiel in the semi-finals

THW Kiel completes the round of 16 of the German Handball Cup. The record winner prevailed in an exciting northern duel at HSV Hamburg with 30:27 (12:12).

The best THW throwers in front of 5,876 spectators were Eric Johansson and Emil Madsen with nine goals each. Leif Tissier and Frederik Bo Andersen each scored seven times for Hamburg.

The game started evenly: While the Hamburg team tried to get up to speed with a mobile defense, the Kiel team relied primarily on their throwing power from the backcourt.

THW had some problems with HSV goalkeeper Robin Haug. The Norwegian had seven saves to his credit in the first half. Kiel’s keeper Andreas Wolff, however, played no role. The German national goalkeeper had to give up his place for Tomas Mrkva midway through the first half.

Red card for Hamburg returnees

In the 28th minute, Hamburg’s Dino Corak was shown a red card after a foul. The pivot was hired as a replacement for Dane Andreas Magaard, who had surgery on his finger. At 17:14 (36th minute) by Hendrik Pekeler, the THW was in the lead with three goals for the first time. Nevertheless, the game remained exciting until the final phase.

Kiel now against Magdeburg

In the round of 16, Kiel will face defending champions SC Magdeburg at home. This was the result of the draw following Kiel’s second round win at HSV.

The lots were drawn by Steffen Baumgart. The coach of the second division soccer team Hamburger SV was jokingly criticized for the pairing by Kiel managing director Viktor Szilagyi. “He did almost everything wrong,” said the Austrian on the streaming service Dyn and added: “We have a home game, we are very happy about that.”

Rhein-Neckar Löwen meet the Füchse Berlin

In another top duel, the Rhein-Neckar Löwen meet the Füchse Berlin. HC Empor Rostock is the last third division team to face Bundesliga relegated HBW Balingen-Weilstetten. The round of 16 games will be played on November 13th and 14th. The final round will take place on April 12th and 13th, 2025 in Cologne.
