DHL opens circular CityHub in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht

DHL eCommerce officially opened the new CityHub in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht on Thursday, located on the Ambachtsezoom business park where circular construction is the norm. The ceremony took place in the presence of customers and representatives of the municipality, including alderman Leo Platschorre.

Every day, 170 employees sort and deliver more than 10,000 parcels per day in a large circle around Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, which also includes Zwijndrecht, Heerjansdam and part of Ridderkerk, Barendrecht and Rotterdam-Zuid. This is often done with electric cars.

The CityHub was built according to the BREEAM Outstanding sustainability standard. The location is gas-free and uses electricity from its own solar collectors, which fill the roof. The building is circular, which means that all raw materials and materials are 100% recyclable. Nothing is glued, welded or sealed and the floor is specially coated so that everything can be taken apart and reused.

The short distances to households in the region, the smart routes, high loading rates and the electric vans optimise sustainability and traffic movements. DHL ServicePoints and parcel machines are also supplied in these routes. Picking up or bringing parcels to these service points yourself is seen as even more sustainable, especially if this is done on foot or by bike.

CityHub Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht is the sixteenth CityHub that has been built in a short period of time in the Dutch network of 130 local branches. In the coming period, the construction of similar CityHubs will start in Nieuw-Vennep, The Hague and Rotterdam-Noord, among others. Land is being sought in other locations. The construction of the fifth national DHL sorting centre, which will be located in Zwolle, is also in full development. A similar sorting centre opened in Dordrecht two years ago. These sorting centres supply the 130 CityHubs spread across the Netherlands, including the one in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht.
