Argentina will play their next match against Chile at the Monumental Stadium in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers next September. If Di Maria agrees in that match, he can be seen on the field in Argentina jersey for 11 minutes.
In this context, Di Maria’s wife said, ‘I heard that they (AFA) want Di Maria to play in Argentina for the farewell match. Not sure if he will play 11 minutes against Chile yet, but the plan is great. He deserves it. If something like that happens, he will come with joy.’
Argentine media TYC Sports reported that the AFA plans to honor Di Maria at the next match against Chile on September 5. In that case, he may be seen on the field again for a short period of time. However, the AFA has not confirmed anything about his game so far.
Di Maria himself has confirmed that he will be present to support the team in the Chile match despite not taking the field. In this context, he said, ‘If he says, I will definitely come to the field. But not to play. So far this decision is right.’
Di Maria announced his retirement plans in November last year. He then said that he will play in the national team jersey for the last time in the 2024 Copa America. As such, Di Maria, who scored 31 goals in 144 matches in Argentina’s jersey, ended his exciting football career with the Copa final.
