Diablo 4: Unimaginable revenue for Blizzard from microtransactions

A leak that came from the LinkedIn profile of Harrison Froeschke, former senior product manager of Diablo 4, revealed some interesting details about the game’s revenue. Shortly before finally deleting the information, Froeschke boasted about the impressive financial results of Diablo 4. Specifically, he mentioned that his role at Blizzard included managing the monetization strategy of the in-game store, such as cosmetics, prices, offer packages, personalized discounts and roadmap planning, leading to micromarketing (MTX) revenue of over 150 million dollars. In addition, Froeschke worked with other teams to organize sales of the game, from pre-sale to the first expansion, bringing in total revenue of over 1 billion dollars.

These numbers, while impressive, don’t come as much of a surprise as Diablo 4 is Blizzard’s best-selling game to date. Although some players got it through Game Pass, it’s notable that a full-price game can make about 15% of its total revenue from the in-game shop. This success continues to inspire the video game industry to strive for similar results, despite the several failures we’ve seen in the past.

The first expansion of Diablo 4, titled Vessel of Hatred, will be released on October 8. This expansion will continue the story, while adding a new class.
