Some cases where a real estate agent has experienced sexual harassment became public last week. SKVL (Suomen Kiinteistönvälittäjät ry) asked its members about the extent of the issue at the moment.

Difficult divorce cases have occasionally caused some level of mistrust of the mediator on the part of one of the parties and led to harassment, says SKVL’s CEO Jussi Mannerberg

“First of all, I can say that we have an absolute zero tolerance in this matter and we recommend to our members that all cases are reported to the authorities immediately,” says Mannerberg.

“Fortunately, based on our survey, there are very few cases, but there have been some in the last three years. About 10% of brokers have experienced one or two incidents in the past three years. About 2–3% of brokers have experienced harassment more often. Both female and male mediators are harassed. Fortunately, no more serious cases have come to our attention. I believe that real estate agents’ knowledge of people is at such a good level that they know how to recognize in advance if the client is not really interested in real estate,” emphasizes Mannerberg.

The bigger problem today is that people have changed their behavior in a more aggressive direction.

“For example, difficult divorce cases have occasionally caused some level of mistrust of the mediator on the part of one of the parties and led to harassment. This is really unfortunate and needs to be addressed by professionals
to do their work even in difficult situations without interruption”, comments Mannerberg.

Other challenging housing transaction situations, for example in the commissions of heirs, have occasionally come to the fore regarding harassment of brokers. Verbal and electronic messaging, for example, from the applicant of a rental apartment who came second in the selection to the broker was also mentioned as one form of harassment directed at brokers.

“Real estate brokerage is a profession where personal matters are handled confidentially and the broker’s task is to serve all parties equally,” states Mannerberg.

Customers must understand that a friendly broker is never looking for a new partner, but is doing his job, where all conditioning and inappropriate behavior is always highly reprehensible and inappropriate and leads to a report to the authorities,” sums up Jussi Mannerberg.
