Chaos V-Ray, the secret of visual success

To be able to best represent the decadence of the world in The Last of UsDigital Domain has chosen to rely on V-Raya photorealistic ray-tracing rendering software created by Chaos. V-Ray guaranteed speed and efficiencyallowing you to create photorealistic scenarios without sacrificing visual quality. His versatility was fundamental to manage the six weeks available for filming. As explained by Bob White, Head of CG at Digital Domain, V-Ray allowed the team to quickly reach 80% of the visual result, refining the details only in a second phase. An approach that has made the difference compared to other software, which requires more time and complexity in the rendering phase.

The creative vision behind it The Last of Us

Mitchell Drain, VFX Supervisor di Digital Domainexplained that the goal was to depict a world in which nature slowly takes over human creations, developing upon them without completely destroying them. The adaptation from the video game to the series

Although inspired by the video game of the same name, the Digital Domain team faced a major challenge: adapt an immersive, interactive world into a believable visual context for a TV series. Drain pointed out that many artists were familiar with the video game and wanted to maintain some iconic elements, but the series required greater attention to visual realism. A notable example was the Cordyceps mushroom, a key element of the franchise, which was crafted with meticulous attention to detail to ensure continuity and credibility.

Innovation and technical challenges

Time limitations have been one of the biggest obstacles for Digital Domain. The team had just six weeks to complete a project that would normally take six months. To overcome this obstacle, Innovative 2D compositing techniques were used combined with advanced rendering, achieving a balance between creativity and efficiency. Drain emphasized that these flexible techniques will also be applied in future projects, offering new possibilities for time and resource management.
