(Health Korea News / Lee Chang-yong) A digital therapeutic used to treat alcohol addiction is entering confirmatory clinical trials.

According to Hallym University Medical Center on the 13th, Professor Lee Sang-gyu (Clinical Trial Principal Investigator) of the Department of Psychiatry at Hallym University Chuncheon Sacred Heart Hospital will conduct a ‘confirmatory clinical trial of A-STOP (Alcoholism Smart Therapy on Prescription), a digital therapeutic device for improving addiction symptoms in patients with alcohol use disorder, approved by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, for 1 year and 4 months from the 26th of last month to December 2025.

Alcohol use disorder is a mental disorder related to alcohol use, in which self-control is impossible and tolerance and withdrawal symptoms occur. It is a disease that requires treatment as it is a condition in which drinking continues despite social or occupational problems caused by repeated drinking.

According to the 2021 Mental Health Survey Report by the National Center for Mental Health under the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the lifetime prevalence rate of alcohol use disorder is 11.6%, which is higher than nicotine use disorder (9.5%), depressive disorder (7.7%), and anxiety disorder (9.3%).

‘A-STOP’ is a digital therapeutic (DTX) for treating alcoholism. Professor Lee plans to verify the effectiveness of lowering the treatment threshold and resolving symptoms in the living environment through this digital therapeutic device.

The professor said, “Alcohol and other addictions have low treatment motivation and compliance, and there is no definitive treatment method, so a single treatment technique is bound to be ineffective.” He added, “The digital treatment device ‘A-STOP’ will lower the treatment threshold for alcohol addiction and contribute to resolving the unmet medical need for more effective improvement of alcohol addiction symptoms and recovery in the living environment.”

This clinical trial is a clinical trial for approval of the use of digital therapeutic devices to evaluate the effectiveness of alcohol symptoms. In addition to patients diagnosed with mental and behavioral disorders due to alcohol use, residents of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province who are experiencing physical and psychological difficulties due to drinking can participate through a preliminary evaluation. For inquiries about participation, contact the outpatient clinic of the Department of Psychiatry, Hallym University Chuncheon Sacred Heart Hospital.

Meanwhile, this clinical trial is being led by Hallym University Chuncheon Sacred Heart Hospital, and Hanyang University Hospital, Konyang University Hospital, and Wonju Severance Christian Hospital are jointly participating in the research.
