Discussion about goalkeeper change at BVB

Substitute keeper Alexander Meyer showed a strong performance in Borussia Dortmund’s 2-1 win against RB Leipzig. Will the 33-year-old now permanently increase the pressure on BVB regular goalkeeper Gregor Kobel?

At least that’s what the two reporters Manfred Sedlbauer and Oliver Müller philosophize about in the “Sport1” podcast “Die Dortmund-Woche”.

“Meyer would have deserved significantly more games. But that is also the fate of a number two. For BVB, this situation is of course a luxury,” emphasized Sedlbauer.

For the journalist, a real BVB hammer is even an option. “Perhaps we can split it up a bit in the future,” he noted and added: “Perhaps such a regular change would also mean that Kobel is no longer injured so often.”

Müller agreed with Sedlbauer’s comments. Meyer is “better than Kobel in terms of football”. “Goalkeepers are always special guys. Even if they have a good relationship, they stalk each other,” he said.

Kobel suffered an injury in the cup game against VfL Wolfsburg (0-1). According to “Bild”, some blood was said to have flowed into his thigh, which meant that the BVB doctors had to prescribe a slightly longer rest break for the Swiss international.

Meyer jumped into the breach against RB Leipzig and played a strong game. The veteran will also be between the posts again in the Champions League against Sturm Graz, as Kobel is still out.

BVB coach Sahin raves about Meyer

BVB coach Nuri Sahin raved highly about Meyer at the press conference on Monday. The goalkeeper is “an exceptional character, a team player”.

“His qualities came to light at the weekend: a fantastic goalkeeper, a very, very good footballer. He’s also very ambitious in his head when it comes to football. We’re happy that he’s with us and I was very happy for him.” , Sahin praised his protégé.

The coach didn’t want to go into possible competition in goal: “Greg is injured at the moment, so there’s no point in talking about it. I’m very, very happy that we have two goalkeepers. Greg is a world-class goalkeeper and With Alex, a number two who is exceptional is hard to find. I’m happy about both of them.”
