Dismal record for German car brand

Within the EU, car manufacturers issued a total of 242 recalls in 2024, according to statistics such as We Car Owners have compiled.

This is down from the year before, when automakers issued 335 recalls.

However, the statistics point to a gloomy trend for German premium brands.

What is a recall?

A recall is a method car manufacturers can use to fix problems on both new and older car models.

The errors can be of both serious and less serious nature.

In most cases, the cars are recalled for faults that could in some way harm the driver or passengers. The second most common reason for a recall is fire risk, for example due to a short circuit.

In some cases, a fault can be fixed with an over-the-air software update, but in most cases a workshop visit is required.

Dismal record for German car brand

Mercedes is a brand known for its high quality, but in the last year has topped the list of the brands with the most recalls. In 2024, it was instead another German premium brand, specifically BMW, that broke the record for the number of recalls.

In total, BMW issued 29 recalls in 2024 if you count the Alpina cars, which are tuned versions of the brand’s standard models. Even without these, however, BMW tops the list of most recalls.

With this in mind, one wonders if German cars are still as well built as they once were.

However, we car owners are careful to point out that a recall is not always something negative, as it means that the car manufacturer takes its responsibility and corrects an identified fault in the right way.
