Released just a few days ago, Vaiana 2 could well become the animated film of all records. The new animated classic Disney has just broken an impressive record, previously held by The Snow Queen 2.
Vaiana 2: Mickey is in heaven
After a long journey through the desert during the 2000s, where Disney struggled to adapt to the resounding success of the productions of the Pixar studio (which it has since bought) and the DreamWorks studio, the 2010 decade was much more prosperous for the big-eared studio. Three of his films have exceeded a billion dollars at the box office (The Snow Queen, Zootopia et Frozen 2), absolutely impressive performances for animated films. Unfortunately for Disney, the 2020s seem to be going the way of the 2000s… If we are not yet talking about crossing the desert, we feel that the hot sand is not far away.
Indeed, hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, the studio has decided to adapt its strategy, alternating exclusive releases on Disney+ (Raya and the Last Dragon in 2021 and Avalonia: The Strange Journey in 2022) and theatrical releases (Encanto: The Fantastic Madrigal Family in 2021, Wish: Asha and the Good Star). The first aroused indifference, the second were box office failures. The one of Wish was all the harder for Disney to take as it was the event film produced for the studio’s 100th anniversary.
Faced with these successive hard blows, Disney has decided to change its approach once again, devoting itself as a priority to producing sequels to its animated classics which performed best at the box office. The group launched the production of Vaiana 2, Zootopia 2 (expected for November 2025), Frozen 3 (planned for 2026) and Frozen 4. Released on November 27, 2024 in French and American theaters, Vaiana 2 shows that the strategy is paying off for Disney.
The American release date was not chosen at random. Indeed, while films are generally released on Fridays in the United States, Disney chose to release it on Wednesday, the first day of the five-day Thanksgiving holiday. We learn today in Variety that the latest Disney has just brought in 28 million dollars on the day of the famous American holiday, thus breaking the historical record of Frozen 2which earned $15 million on the same day in 2019. According to initial estimates, Disney should record $200 million on American soil at the end of the five days of Thanksgiving. That is approximately the amount collected worldwide by Charm et Wish at the end of their theatrical run.
We recall that initially, Vaiana 2 was conceived as a Disney+ series, before its editing was completely overhauled in order to produce an animated film. The specialized press predicts that the new classic from the Disney studio could become the most lucrative animated film in the history of cinemathus surpassing the record established a few months ago by Vice Versa 2 from the Pixar studio.
