Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed Review

The all-time favorite Epic Mickey is a video game released in 2010 for the Nintendo Wii by Disney Interactive Studios and developed by Junction Point Studios under the direction of Warren Spector. If you belong to the group of those who played the game a decade ago, you would definitely be tempted to reminisce by playing the brand new remaster Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, which was released recently. If you still have no idea what it’s all about, the world of Disney will always find a way to pique your interest. We, as big fans of the classic cult 3D platformer, of course, also experimented with Rebrushed. It’s time to discover it together!

Case

In case you’re not familiar, in the game Mickey Mouse finds himself discovering a mysterious world called the Wasteland. This parallel world is full of forgotten Disney characters and forgotten objects. The Wasteland is the result of creation and decay: this is where the characters that are no longer popular and the objects that have been forgotten live. Mickey’s adventure begins when he meets the Mad Doctor, a strange wizard who uses magical elements to control the Wasteland.

The Mad Doctor proceeds to create creations from the remains of these forgotten characters and tries to control their world. In a moment of carelessness, however, Mickey destroys the balance of the Wasteland, and the characters who live there are angry with him. So he takes responsibility to correct his mistake.

Gameplay

Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed is a 3D platformer that combines classic game mechanics with innovative ideas, offering a unique experience to players. There are also 2D mini-levels that recreate classic Disney moments. Despite expectations, there are no new abilities for Mickey or revolutionary gameplay changes. Mickey Mouse takes on the role of hero in a dark and magical world where color is the main protagonist. With the use of a magic brush, he can paint and erase elements from his environment, drastically affecting the atmosphere and layout of the world around him.

Game mechanics include jumping, double jumping, swinging, and many other genre-specific moves. This allows players to explore the world of Wasteland in an easy and enjoyable way, without the need for multiple failed attempts at difficult jumps. Each level is full of puzzles that require the use of the brush, allowing players to uncover secrets, hidden passages and collectibles that unlock goodies. This dimension of gameplay offers challenges that satisfy both young and old players.

The transition from track to track is accompanied by beautiful cinematics reminiscent of the beloved Disney cartoons, adding to the atmosphere of the game. An interesting combat mechanism allows enemies to become Mickey’s friends, offering assistance in his adventures. The Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed excels at puzzles with the use of the brush, ensuring that the experience is refreshing and full of discoveries.

Graphics & sound

This is the category that garners the most interest in any remaster, since the story and gameplay in general are familiar to someone who has had previous contact with the game. Here, what we would say is that it is an “honest” remaster that is worth its… money, as it includes several improvements compared to the old one, without, however, leaving us with our mouths open! Despite the fact that there are no “quality” or “performance” options, we have a video game that remains stable in its performance.

The soundtrack of the game is one of the positives that we could mention. The Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed surrounded by atmospheric music and sound effects that take us back to Disney movies. It would help if there was voice acting in the cut scenes, because the truth is that we felt a bit… half.

In general…

In conclusion, we would say that the Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed is an enjoyable 3D platform adventure whether you’re a Disney fan or not. However, we can observe in some cases the marks that time has left on the game, characterizing it as slightly outdated. If you only invest in the main story, you will need about 17 hours to finish it. If you want to discover all its secrets, estimate more or less 26 hours. Rebrushed offers a pleasant and calm experience, despite not being particularly challenging or innovative. As a whole, the game stands out for its creative spirit and subversive approach to the platformer genre.
