Disney has recently been under fire for focusing on political correctness at the expense of production quality and butchering classics that, according to fans of the brand, should not be touched – let’s take the live-action remakes of The Little Mermaid and Snow White as an example. For years, the corporation has been working intensively on the image of an exclusive brand that fights discrimination, but apparently only from the outside, because from the inside it is not so great. The giant will have to pay a penalty for lowering women’s salaries. And it’s quite a big one, amounting to over 40 million dollars.
The women won in court – Disney agrees to a settlement
Pay inequalities between women and men are a real topic – especially overseas. This did not go unnoticed by Disney, which was sued by approximately 9,000 people. women, accusing the company of lowering salaries and favoring male employees.
It all started with LaRonda Rasmussen – the woman was the first to decide to take legal action after she discovered discrepancies between her paychecks and those of her colleagues in the same positions. Men earned much more despite having similar responsibilities, often despite having less experience. The case gained media coverage, which led to more Disney employees – both current and former – joining the class action lawsuit.
During the process, salary lists from the period from April 2015 to December 2022 were analyzed. It turned out that women actually earned about 2% less. – we are still talking about equivalent positions.
Disney ultimately decided to settle and accepted the court-ordered obligation to pay $43.3 million in compensation and to hire an expert to help develop a fair pay system.
