The little girl was transported by helicopter to the hospital in Foggia, but her life is not in danger. She is conscious and alert and will be admitted to the pediatric department of the hospital in Foggia for further tests.

The body was recovered offshore by a dinghy and taken to the port of Vieste. The medical personnel who intervened on the scene made several attempts to resuscitate him, but unfortunately the 57 year old didn’t make it.
The dynamics of the tragedy

According to what was reported by Ansa, based on the information provided by the Port Authority, they were both in the sea together with three other family members, two children and a boy, when the tragedy occurred.
A sudden increase in current dragged Savina and her granddaughter away from the others. At that point the woman tried to keep the child with her head above the sea while she, probably due to an illness caused by the effort, ended up under water.
Also present on the beach the husband who, realizing the situation, dived in, managing to reach the other 3 members of the family who were closer to the shore. Another swimmer instead alerted a nearby dinghy to rescue Savina and her niece, who were carried away by the current.
The man on board the vessel rescued both of them and immediately tried to perform cardiac massage on the 57-year-old in the hope of saving her. But there was nothing that could be done for the woman.
