How do well-known Slovenians experience the day of favorable shopping, do they go on a shopping spree or do they prefer to avoid the crowds, and what “black” plans do they have this year?
The history of Black Friday dates back to 1929, as it is associated with the biggest stock market crash. It is also said that in the shopping world, the beginning of Black Friday dates back to 1952, when American stores first used the term. It initially referred to traffic jams and large crowds in stores caused by mass shopping ahead of the holiday season. Later, this term spread and took on the meaning of the shopping holiday as we know it today. Black Friday has also been synonymous in Slovenia for several years with mass shopping, discounts and crowded stores.

“I don’t even know when was the last time I was in a store, because I got used to shopping online. (laughs) I avoid stores even more on Black Friday because of the crowd. Every year I decide in advance what I’m going to buy on the day of the mega discounts, except this year, because I don’t need anything right now. If I happen to see something I like while browsing the web, it will go into the online shopping cart.”

“Until now, I didn’t pay attention to this day, but this year I plan to buy on Black Friday for the first time, because the discount will come in handy. It is about the purchase of computer equipment and other electronics. Quite deliberately, as a well-behaved consumer, I have been waiting for this Black Friday for several weeks. (laughs) The purchase will be done online, appropriate for the period.”

“Honestly, I don’t pay much attention to Black Friday and it’s not particularly on my radar, but at the same time I can’t say that I completely avoid it. (laughs) If there is an opportunity or something that I absolutely have to buy, then I buy it. I never really plan to throw myself into the Black Friday shopping frenzy… But you know what, now you’ve reminded me that I need new body armor, so I’ll wait until Black Friday and buy them cheaper. Thank you.”

“I strongly avoid this commercial holiday. I make my own Friday when I’m in a shopping spree. I always shop live, never online as I don’t find it very attractive, it just doesn’t have the charm. Otherwise, I buy very impulsively and without planning. I don’t plan to buy anything on Black Friday this year, but I do have a slightly larger purchase coming up in the coming months. Of course, I won’t tell you what.”

“I generally don’t hunt for discounts because I don’t like being chased while shopping. But it is true that my female genetics are not immune to a good purchase, so I buy too many things. It’s always more fun to shop in person, but online is more and more convenient. It depends on things. If it’s something I like, I always buy it live and enjoy the moment of purchase.”

“On Black Friday, I always think of the scene from the historical film 300, when everyone is ready to fight, just waiting for the signal to rush into the attack. We all unthinkingly buy things that are discounted even though we don’t need them. I also know people who buy things in stock, including things they never use. I’d rather spend the money on some good wine.” (laughs)

“This year, I got the feeling that the whole of November is marked by Black Friday, as retailers have been warning us about their discounts since November 1. For me, this is another day that we Slovenian shoppers have adopted from the West, as ‘Black Friday’ has long been an international shopping holiday. It’s about advertising high discounts, but here we don’t really have such discounts as abroad. I usually only buy a perfume on this day, but since I recently came across an online fraud, I am much more careful when shopping.”
Don’t come back
“I myself resist emptying my wallet unnecessarily. I emphasize again every year, before you get dragged into the frenzy of Black Friday and holiday shopping, calm your heart and think about whether you really need something. On such occasions, we prefer to remember much more heartfelt and environmentally friendly solutions.”
