Sony stops making small phones and the Chromecast gets (another) update. Here’s the biggest Android news of the week.
‘Renders show Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra with thin screen bezels’
Samsung continues to tinker with the design of its most premium smartphone. Renders show that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra will differ in a number of ways from the current S24 Ultra.
The bezels around the screen are clearly a bit thinner again than this year. In addition, Samsung is saying goodbye to the curved sides. They become completely flat, just like on the normal Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus. The images, made by the well-known insider OnLeaksalso show a small curve in the corners of the screen. Previous Ultra models did not have these.

‘Sony to discontinue compact high-end smartphones’
For lovers of small high-end phones, there is less and less choice. Asus previously stopped with the compact Zenfones and now Sony seems to be going in the same direction. According to the German website Smartdroid last year’s Sony Xperia 5 V will not get a successor.
The Japanese company is reportedly seeing a lot of customers switch from the Xperia 5 series to the Xperia 1 series, which features larger high-end smartphones, with the Sony Xperia 1 VI being the most recent example. It has a 6.5-inch display, while the Xperia 5 V had a 6.1-inch display.

Download: Chromecast with Google TV gets another update
The Google TV Streamer will soon be released in the Netherlands, but that does not mean that Google has forgotten the Chromecast. The search giant is spreading updates this year and is already releasing the sixth for the Chromecast with Google TV and Chromecast with Google TV (HD).
The latest update is 143MB in size and has version number STTE.240615.007. The update does not introduce any new features, but it does include the July 2024 Android security patch. This makes the Chromecast better protected against vulnerabilities in the operating system. Google also fixes some bugs.

‘Samsung’s next budget phone isn’t exactly groundbreaking’
Although the Samsung Galaxy A16 is still a few months away from its intended launch, it has already been spotted in leaked images. Tech website Android Headlines managed to get the pictures and shared them online, which gives us more information about the unreleased device.
Starting with the design of the casing. Apart from a bright light blue or green colour, it looks almost identical to its predecessor: the Galaxy A15. This means that it has flat sides, three separate cameras on the back and the so-called ‘Key Island’ around the power and volume keys.
