Do you know how to properly clean upholstered furniture? Ways to remove stains at home

To maintain the attractive appearance of upholstered furniture, it must be cleaned periodically. Stains can be removed using both household chemicals and folk remedies.

Important!

Choose a cleaning product suitable for furniture fabric. Try it on an inconspicuous area first, and only if the product does not damage the fabric, use it on furniture.

Which method to choose – dry or wet cleaning?

Dry cleaning

Dry cleaning helps remove dust from fabrics that should not be wetted. For such cleaning it is best to use a vacuum cleaner. Turn it on at minimum power and make sure that the attachment does not stretch the fabric. Fabrics with pile (velvet, velor) are best cleaned with a soft-bristled brush and a special dry cleaning product.

Wet cleaning

The wet cleaning method allows you to quickly and effectively clean most fabrics, which is why it is used more often. First, vacuum the furniture, then dampen particularly dirty areas and stains with a damp sponge. Treat the stains with a cleaning solution and leave it on for 15–20 minutes. If the fabric allows, scrub the stain with a brush towards the center, finally removing the cleaning agent with a damp sponge. Let the fabric dry.

What folk remedies should I use?

– Dissolve 1 tablespoon of vinegar, soda and washing powder in 1 liter of water. Wet the stains with a brush or sponge and rub lightly, avoiding excess foam. Leave for a short time, then wipe with a cloth dampened in clean water.

– Rub 2-3 tablespoons of laundry soap and dissolve in 1 liter of warm water. Soak a cotton napkin in the solution and treat the contaminated areas. Only dampen the cloth so that the solution does not penetrate too deeply, otherwise the soap solution will be difficult to remove.

– Dissolve 3 teaspoons of dishwashing detergent in 1 liter of water and treat the fabric in the same way as with soapy water.

– Dissolve 15–18 drops of hydrogen peroxide in 1 liter of warm water. To create a foam, add 1 tablespoon of dishwashing detergent or liquid soap. Mix the solution thoroughly, pour it into a spray bottle and spray the product onto the surface of the upholstered furniture. Let it sit, then wipe with a damp cloth.

– Lemon juice has the same acidic properties as vinegar, but its advantage is that after cleaning the furniture will have a pleasant aroma. Dissolve 120 ml of lemon juice in ½ liter of water, pour the solution into a spray bottle and spray on the furniture, let it sit, then wipe the surface with a damp sponge.

– Dissolve 50 ml of ammonia and 50 ml of table vinegar in 1 liter of warm water, mix thoroughly and apply to a dirty cloth. Rub the surface of the fabric with a napkin or sponge, then rinse with a damp cloth. Please note that this solution has a bleaching effect, so it is best to use it only on light-colored furniture.
