“Even if it says ‘zero’ sugar, they contain a lot of calories!! Too many consumers casually eat sweets that say ZERO sugar in the belief that they have zero calories. False, wrong, a big hoax!! The food industry understood that we want to avoid sugar and then put a whole range of maltitol products on the market.

Which is a sugar alcohol with 30% fewer calories. It is absorbed more slowly into the blood and does not increase blood sugar suddenly, it is recommended for diabetics, not for those who have lost weight. It’s just that the manufacturers use this trick and write big on the label zero sugar!

Dr. Bilic: Who has the patience and good eyes to read the label?

“If we did that, we would be amazed to see that the number of calories is identical to that of classic sugar products! I didn’t give up and here’s what I found out: biscuits have 430 cal/100g, chocolate 480 cal, and wafers 460, i.e. 100 cal/piece…which is enormous for a product that is supposed to be sugar-free,” said the doctor nutritionist Mihaela Bilic, on her Facebook page.

Dr. Bilic: : Producers use this trick

These products contain between 30 and 40% maltitol, an ingredient that, together with palm oil, contributes to a less pleasant taste, thus discouraging consumers from opting for such sweeteners, explains the specialist doctor.

“Not to mention the ingredients, between 30 and 40% maltitol, plenty of palm oil and a dubious taste. No wonder people avoid products with sweeteners! Mind you, they are not those synthetic sweeteners that were used in the old days, i.e. saccharin and aspartame. The highlight is that those sweeteners really have 0 cal and the only products in which you find them are soft drinks”, says Mihaela Bilic.

Dr. Bilic pointed out that, apart from ZERO juices, there are no truly calorie-free desserts, drawing attention to the figure.

“Sugar alcohols are added to flour products and chocolate, which are also called sweeteners – creating confusion and the illusion that the products are for weight loss. Don’t fall into this trap, rather eat a small portion of the classic, good-tasting sweets. As for sugar alcohols such as maltitol and xylitol, they are helpful in chewing gum, they have a protective effect against tooth decay. Other than ZERO juice, don’t be fooled into thinking there are ZERO desserts. Alms expense and ZERO result on the silhouette”, said nutritionist Mihaela Bilic, on her website Facebook.
