Doctor warns about new ‘slimming’ supplement launched by Kourtney Kardashian: ‘a nameless scam’

Kourtney Kardashian has just launched her “natural” dietary supplement, GLP-1. Billed as a “capsule designed to increase GLP-1 hormone levels, reduce hunger, and promote healthy weight management,” the supplement contains three ingredients: Eriomin® lemon extract, Supresa® saffron extract, and Morosil red orange fruit extract.

In reality, the dietary supplement imitates the action of semaglutide (Ozempic). This medication is indicated for insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes and is available only on prescription. However, field reports indicate that it is being misused by non-diabetic people for the purpose of weight loss.

Top Santé interviewed Dr. Jean-Michel Cohen, a nutritionist, on the effectiveness of the dietary supplement developed by the Kardashian sister. Can we rely on it to lose weight? Is it risky? Explanations.

What is a GLP-1?

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone in the body that helps control blood sugar by encouraging the pancreas to release more insulin. Insulin helps your body use or store glucose (sugar) in your blood after you eat. The medications mimic your body’s GLP-1 hormone with synthetic GLP-1.

They were originally designed for people with diabetes because they help lower blood sugar levels. However, the medical community realized that patients also lost weight while taking them.

The reality TV show star’s dietary supplement Keeping Up With the Kardashians is not a GLP-1 agonist, however. It contains ingredients called nutraceuticals that are supposed to increase your body’s natural GLP-1 levels. The product’s press release claims that its three ingredients have been ” demonstrated in clinical studies to provide significant weight management benefits » . But what is it really?

“Completely useless”

Dr. Cohen is adamant that Kourtney Kardashian’s product will have no effect on your weight. It should not be toxic, but completely useless”.

The doctor looks at the three ingredients: “Crocin contained in saffron which is said to have antioxidant, anticancer and antidepressant properties. How will this make you lose weight? There is not a word about weight loss. It is shameful, a nameless scam”, emphasizes Dr. Cohen.

As for lemon, we know its anti-infectious properties, particularly against streptococci. The doctor also mentions its detoxifying, hypocholesterolemic virtues and its facilitating action in digestion. Again, nothing concerning weight loss.

Finally, the third ingredient, Morosil red orange fruit, will not guarantee more effectiveness in weight loss.Morosil was all the rage at one time. It turns out that bitter orange contains a substance that can help you lose weight. However, the person who promoted this product did not understand that not all oranges have this power, only bitter oranges!”.

Can some dietary supplements be effective in weight loss?

I was surprised to find that one or two products could be interesting, but for the most part, there is no proven effectiveness.“, warns the doctor. However, even those that seem “interesting” will not be able to replace a good diet and physical activity.

“It can be a support, an aid to boost the body, but don’t expect a miracle.”

Dr. Cohen warns against the many gummies now on the market that promise “weight loss,” “satiety,” etc., but he says they won’t help you.

If you need to lose weight, seek help from your doctor or a dietitian. They will help you understand the reasons for your excess weight, which can be linked to many factors (poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, excess alcohol, poor sleep, stress, etc.). Once the cause is identified, you can work on the cause of the problem with support. But don’t expect a pill to turn into a magic wand.
