For the attack on medical staff which occurred in the Thoracic Surgery department of the Policlinico Riuniti in Foggia last Wednesday 4 September, after the death of a 22-year-old from Cerignola, five people were investigated for injuries and threats. They are all relatives of the girl. The Prosecutor’s Office also opened an investigation into the causes of the patient’s death.

The Prosecutor’s Office served a notice of conclusion of the investigations to 5 family members of the 22 year old: his father, sister, two brothers and an uncle. The girl, who arrived at the hospital after an accident, died during a delicate procedure surgery.
In addition to the attacks on medical staff, the judicial authority is investigating also on the death of the patient. In the past few weeks twenty people, among doctors and healthcare workers, were registered in the register of suspects for manslaughter.

“We are still very scared. That night was really bad. – one of the doctors beaten by the girl’s relatives and friends had said some time ago – There were many of them. We were very afraid, even of dying. It was really bad. Just remembering it makes us feel afraid again. For all of us it is certainly not a good moment.”
In the days following the violence, a video in which the operators could be seen circulated online and in newspapers barricaded inside a room, while trying to resist the fury of the people outside. During the attack, at least three doctors were were injured, while a doctor had reported the hand fracture got crushed in a door.
The episode had shocked public opinion and was harshly condemned. “In offering our condolences to the victim and his family for the very serious loss – the general director of the ASL Antonio Nigri said immediately afterwards – we are in solidarity with the health workers attackedi, called to ensure highly complex healthcare services such as in cases of road polytrauma. No form of violence towards those who carry out their work can be tolerated.”
