Does Elon Musk have anything to fear?

Check which of the new microblogging platforms will replace X (formerly Twitter). Migration, decentralization or… frustration – what will you choose?

Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads – these platforms have been gaining popularity recently, mainly among people who are fed up with what is happening to Twitter under the rule of Elon Musk, who renamed the website to X. But do any of them have a chance of permanently driving people away? from the “chirping” giant? Let’s see which of these alternatives are really worth keeping on your radar.

Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads and the rest – a brief overview of X’s competitors

When Elon Musk decided to revolutionize Twitter and renamed it X, many users felt like they were in a bad movie. Paid “ticks” (verifications), strange changes in algorithms and strong involvement in politics – some people had enough after the first act. That’s when many people started looking for alternative microblogging platforms. Here are the most interesting ones.

Bluesky – decentralization in the style of old Twitter

Bluesky is the brainchild of Jack Dorsey himself, who apparently foresaw that Twitter might go down a strange path. The platform is decentralized, which in theory means that we have full control over what happens to our data. For now, you’ll only get there by invitation, so the community is a bit like a closed club.

Interface? Just like good old Twitter – simple and familiar. Instead of tweets, there are “skeets” (yes, that name sounds a bit cringe). You can like, comment and share them. The biggest advantage? You control the algorithms and what you see.

Mastodon – for those who value freedom and ease

Mastodon has been around since 2016, but it was only after Musk started his show that it became more trendy. It is decentralized and runs on a federation of servers – instead of one large platform, you have a network of “small Twitters”.

For beginners, it may be a bit of a challenge, because you have to choose a server and understand how it all works. But if you get through the first steps, you have a platform without ads, commercial algorithms and with a strong free speech vibe. The posts here are called “tooty” (you know they had to come up with something of their own). If you like DIY and don’t mind a little gymnastics at the start, Mastodon may be for you.

Threads – Meta does its job, i.e. “text Instagram”

Threads is Meta’s baby. If Zuckerberg’s empire gives you mixed feelings, you can give up in advance. But if you have Instagram and want a quick microblog without any fuss, Threads is not a bad option. Registration? You log in with your Instagram account and that’s it.

Threads is very easy to use. You write texts, post photos and that’s it. There were a lot of features missing at the beginning, but Meta is slowly patching the holes. However, it runs on a central server, so if you’re tired of corporate control, this may not be your cup of tea.

Hive Social – for those who like colors

Hive Social is a mix of Twitter and Instagram with a more casual approach. Colorful interface, easy to use, and you can upload not only texts, but also photos and music.

However, there are some obstacles – the platform sometimes cannot cope with the influx of users, and bugs can be irritating. If you don’t mind a bit of chaos and want to microblog on a platform that probably none of your friends have heard of, Hive delivers.

Post.news – for people who love specifics

Post.news is a more “serious” microblog for fans of good content. If you are interested in serious news and like to discuss articles, this is the place for you. Or rather it was. The Post News platform, which was intended to be a “professional” and more “journalistic” alternative to Twitter, ceased operations in April 2024 due to insufficient user growth.

Do any of these platforms really threaten X?

Each of the platforms discussed has something of its own, but for now, X is still holding strong. Bluesky and Mastodon attract geeks and decentralization fans, and Threads has an army of Instagram users behind it.

Will any of these platforms dethrone X? Probably a slim chance, but time will tell. The most important thing is that we have some choice – and that’s a big plus!
