In the section of diets for weight loss, we find (really) everything: intermittent fasting, Dukan diet, Natman diet, Mediterranean diet, points diet, “food rebalancing”, prepared meals, ketogenic diet, low-calorie or high-protein diets.. There is good and bad.
Is your blood type O? Barbecues are yours!
The blood group diet belongs more to the second category. Developed by an American naturopath in the 1990s, it considers that each blood group (O, A, B, AB) had to follow a particular diet based on “human evolution“.
So, people in group O should adopt a diet rich in meat; those in group A should become vegetarian, those in group B should favor dairy products, while those in group AB should eat a diet mixing the principles of diets A and B.
A bogus diet… which gives the illusion of personalization
Weird ? Yes. But does it work to lose weight and improve your health? No, says sports dietitian-nutritionist Nouchka Simic: “This theory is not based on any solid evidence. A systematic review published inAmerican Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2013) did not find no link between blood type and diet. Similarly, a Canadian study conducted in 2014 showed that the benefits observed in participants were linked to a better overall diet, and not to the blood type itself.” she explains in a video recently published on Instagram. In summary? “The link between blood type and diet is a myth. No serious scientific study validates this theory.”
Why do we nevertheless want to believe it? “Because diets based on blood types give the illusion of personalization! analyzes the dietician-nutritionist. We identify with our group, we believe in it and we are more motivated to follow a structured diet… But in reality, the results (when there are any) come from classic dietary changes: more vegetables, less sugar, less of processed products.“
