Denial from ByteDance, ideas for Elon Musk: TikTok sales as an unexpected alternative

A sale to Elon Musk, of all people, who is an X and Tesla owner, a polarizing multi-billionaire, a supporter of nationalist political movements and, last but not least, a designated member of the new government under Donald Trump, may seem suspicious to many industry observers. Also has ByteDance immediately denied when asked by Varietyto consider such a sale of the US business.

We can’t be expected to comment on pure fiction.

But the deal could still go through. According to Bloomberg, he was at least being considered. And Musk, as the richest person, could afford the US business, which is estimated to be worth between 40 and 50 billion US dollars. However, it would still be unclear how he could manage the financing, since his money is invested in many ways and he also had to use various financing options through third parties to purchase Twitter for $44 billion. This scenario could have advantages for TikTok and X, which would possibly operate together. TikTok’s US business would avoid a ban and continue to operate, albeit under different management. This would make many creators and companies who are resisting a ban happy. In this case, Musk might also be able to gain sympathy from this direction.

Meanwhile, his platform X could benefit from TikTok’s popularity, also as an advertising platform. In this way, the recently weak sales could be increased, while the platform, which is already geared towards more video content – Elon Musk recently announced an algorithm update with a view to more entertainment – would receive enormous added value in the short video context. At the same time, Musk’s AI company xAI should be able to benefit from TikTok data. However, even if this happens, it is still impossible for ByteDance to sell TikTok’s algorithm developed in China. TikTok also recently emphasized this before the Supreme Court.

Any other crazy options? We’ll know more on January 19th

The rumors about a sale of TikTok in the USA are unlikely to stop in the coming days. The situation was similar in 2020. At that time, Donald Trump, as US President, also wanted to force a sale of TikTok’s US business. In addition to Elon Musk, other big players with the necessary financial resources are likely to be mentioned these days, including Microsoft and Co. The biggest YouTuber of all, MrBeast, recently stated in a post on impede.

What is probably just an attention-grabbing joke would probably please many creators. Although James Stephen “Jimmy” Donaldson’s net worth is said to be several hundred million US dollars, he would have to find other ways to finance TikTok’s business.

Meanwhile, many US creators are already using various alternatives to TikTok and are preparing for a time without the app. In addition to YouTube, Instagram and Pinterest, Lemon8, also from ByteDance, and the app REDnote, which also comes from China, are currently receiving enormous amounts of traffic and downloads.
