Donald Trump is not speculating: he would personally negotiate with Russia’s most important ally

Members of the Trump team believe that direct contact may be the most effective way to communicate with Kim Jong-un. The approach builds on previous unprecedented diplomatic efforts that saw Donald Trump hold face-to-face talks with the North Korean dictator during his previous presidency.

During Trump’s 2017-2021 presidency, he met with Kim three times: in Singapore, Hanoi and on the Korean border. The latter was the first time that a sitting American president entered North Korean territory, although direct negotiations did not yield results either.

The political negotiations are still ongoing, and the president-elect has not yet made any final decisions

– claim two Reuters sources.

It is not clear what kind of return Kim would offer Trump. North Koreans ignore President Joe Biden’s four-year rapprochement attempts, North Korean dictator grows more confidentbecause of its expanded missile arsenal and closer ties with Russia.

In a recent speech at a military exhibition in Pyongyang, Kim Jong-un stated:

We have already gone as far as we can in negotiations with the United States.

The outcome of a possible new diplomatic effort is still uncertain. The Trump team’s initial goal would be to restore the core commitment, but additional policy goals or a precise timetable have yet to be defined.

Last Friday, Trump appointed former State Department official Alex Wong as his deputy national security adviser. Wong was previously involved in implementing North Korea strategy and preparing for summits.
