Donald Trump supported a ban on TikTok during his first term as president of the United States. The current American government wants such a ban to be introduced. Trump is now putting a stop to that.
Trump has the US Supreme Court asked to postpone the ban of TikTok. The ban would now take effect on January 19, a day before Trump takes over as president from Joe Biden.
During his election campaign, Trump already announced that he did not want a ban on TikTok. He himself used social media extensively during his campaign to reach younger voters. In the United States, TikTok has about 170 million users.
TikTok would be in danger due to Chinese ownership
The current US government wants a ban on TikTok because the company may have ties with the Chinese government. That is why TikTok is seen as a threat to national security.
If the current government has its way, parent company ByteDance still has the opportunity to get out of the ban by selling American parts of the company. Ultimately, it is still up to the Supreme Court to determine whether there will be a ban.
