Donald Trump would nominate Kelly Loeffler as Secretary of Agriculture

US President-elect Donald Trump intends to nominate Kelly Loeffler for the position of Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, according to sources cited by CNN.

The meeting between Trump and Loeffler is scheduled for Friday afternoon at Mar-a-Lago, but the final decision will be officially announced only by the president.

Loeffler, who represented the state of Georgia in the Senate for a short time, was an active supporter of Trump in the 2024 campaign. She organized fundraising events, including a party to watch the debates, attended by others proposed members for the Trump Cabinet, such as Senator Marco Rubio and Representative Elise Stefanik. Loeffler is also the co-chair of Trump’s inauguration team.

The nomination for the Department of Agriculture is considered important, in the context in which Robert F. Kennedy Jr., appointed to lead the Department of Health, expressed his desire to influence the agricultural sector.

Kelly Loeffler was appointed to the Senate by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp in 2020 to fill the seat left vacant by the retirement of Johnny Isakson due to health reasons. However, Trump then preferred another candidate, Rep. Doug Collins, who lost to Loeffler in the race to remain in this position. However, Loeffler lost the mandate in 2021 to the democrat Raphael Warnock, in an election held in an extremely polarized political context.

During his short tenure in the Senate, Loeffler was a staunch ally of Trump, initially supporting a challenge to the 2020 election results. After the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, Loeffler withdrew his objections, condemning the violence.

Previously, Loeffler was an Atlanta financial executive and co-owner of the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream women’s basketball team. Her husband, Jeffrey Sprecher, is CEO of Intercontinental Exchange.

In 2020, Loeffler announced that she and her husband were divesting their individual shares from the stock market, following controversy regarding trades made before the market decline caused by the pandemic.

This nomination is expected to be formally announced in the coming days, joining other key appointments in the future Trump Cabinet.
