Perry the Donkey, who inspired the Donkey character in “Shrek” to which Eddie Murphy lent his voice, has died. He suffered from hoof disease and was euthanized at the age of 30.
“We are saddened to learn that our beloved Barron Park donkey Perry passed away yesterday at the age of 30. He was a valuable member of our community and we know that many people will be affected by his death,” reads the Darron Park donkey’s official Instagram account.
The animal lived in Bol Park, in Palo Alto, California, just like one of the animators who worked on the animated film “Shrek” for Dreamworks studios.
A team of entertainers went to Bol Park to spend a few hours with Perry. The donkey posed for photos and sketches that were used to model the Donkey character.
Four feature films were released in the “Shrek” franchise between 2001 and 2010. The original “Shrek” movie turned DreamWorks Animation into a powerhouse, grossing $487 million worldwide. The film became the first winner of the Oscar award in the animated feature film category. “Shrek 2” grossed $928 million. Both films competed for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Although “Shrek the Third” and “Shrek Forever After” were less appreciated than the first two films, they still managed to earn $813 million and $752 million worldwide. Both “Puss in Boots” spinoffs were also box office hits, grossing $555 million and $484 million, respectively.
