In 2007, Denzel Washington and Josh Brolin starred in Ridley Scott’s American Gangster along with Russell Crowe and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Josh Brolin (pictured) has revealed in his new interview how the feelings heated up with Denzel Washington on the set of American Gangster. The situation didn’t quite escalate into a physical confrontation, but according to Brolin, it won’t be far from that.
“Yeah, we almost ended up fighting,” Josh Brolin said on a new episode of the In Depth With Graham Bensinger podcast.
In the film, Brolin played detective and Washington infamous drug lord Frank Lucas. There weren’t many shared scenes, but the atmosphere was tense.
The Dune star will stop acting if Denis Villeneuve doesn’t get an Oscar nomination
“Denzel was late to the set and started going over lines… He didn’t change my lines, but he interfered with the structure of the conversation. He said I guess I’ll move this here and bring that there. But all that time he didn’t even look at me. I tried to remember the structure of the conversation and then we practiced. There weren’t many lines, and they were mostly mine. And I had to be really confident, because it was Denzel Washington himself. (…) And then I forgot my line.”
Josh Brolin asked Washington what that line was, while placing his hand on his co-star’s shoulder. It was a mistake.
The Oscar-winning Hollywood star has been sober for 10 years: “I used to drink two bottles of wine a day”
“He would slap my hand away and say don’t fucking ever touch me. I thought, oh shit. I’m about to get into a fight with Denzel Washington. This is crazy. We were no longer Actors, at least in my own mind. For him, he just did his job and acted as Frank Lucas. But I didn’t know that. However, we got over the situation.”
You can watch and listen to the entire report of what happened below. Today, Josh Brolin and Denzel Washington get along just fine, at least according to Brolin.
American Gangster can be streamed on Prime Video and Netflix.
The film’s plot description reads as follows:
“No one usually noticed Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington), the chauffeur of one of Harlem’s leading black crime bosses. But when Lucas’ boss suddenly dies, he seizes the opportunity to build his own empire and create his own version of the American dream. With ingenuity and strict business ethics, Lucas ends up as the ruler of the city’s drug trade, filling the streets with cleaner stuff and better prices.
