The Harbor Masters 64 developer team has announced that it has created a PC version of Star Fox 64, the famous shooter game released in 1997 for Nintendo 64. The project, called Starship, has been secretly developed over the past few months and will be made available for download this holiday season.
This news represents an important milestone for retrogaming enthusiasts and fans of the Star Fox series. The PC version, especially after you saw it in the presentation videoallows you to offer superior graphics quality and better performance compared to traditional emulation, with support for higher resolutions, higher frame rates and ultrawide monitors.
Users will still need to own an original copy of Star Fox 64 to legally use Starship.
Harbor Masters 64 is a group known for having already achieved a PC port of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Their method consists of decompiling the original source code of the games, a complex process but one that allows for high-quality native ports.
Sonic Dreamcaster and Samplywx, two of the developers involved, confirmed on Discord that some parts of the game are not yet fully playable and that multiplayer support is missing. However, the team plans to release the final version of Starship by the end of December.
While native ports are generally considered legal, there remains a risk that Nintendo may attempt to block the project for protect your intellectual property. The Japanese company is known for its uncompromising stance regarding the unauthorized use of its trademarks.
However, the previous port of Ocarina of Time made by Harbor Masters 64 it is still available on GitHub after two years, which also bodes well for the future of Starship.
