Don’t you feel safe? This is how the SOS function works on your smartphone

Did you know that your Android smartphone has an SOS function on board? Hopefully you never need it, but you can easily activate the option if you are in an emergency or do not feel safe.

This is how the SOS function on your Android smartphone works

If your smartphone runs on Android 12 or newer, you can use the SOS function. This ensures that you get help when you need it. Simply pressing the power button five times activates the special function. You decide for yourself what exactly happens.

For example, you can choose to have 112 called, but also, for example, to have certain contacts forwarded your location. It is also possible to record an emergency video. The step-by-step plan below is based on Android 15 used on a Google Pixel 9 Pro. The steps to follow may therefore be slightly different on your device.

  1. Open the settings on your smartphone;
  2. Tap ‘Safety & Emergencies’;
  3. Tap ‘SOS’ and tap the blue button: ‘Turn on SOS’;

If you then press the power button five times, the SOS function is activated. In the menu you can set how you want to start the emergency actions. This can be done, among other things, by holding your finger on the screen for three seconds. If you don’t want that, simply set it to start automatically after five seconds.

You have three types of emergency actions you can use. First, you can ensure that your device automatically calls the emergency services. You can also share information with specified contacts, such as your exact location or other relevant information.

Finally, you have the option to record an ’emergency video’. This way you can leave a message for certain people or give instructions, for example. This video can be up to 45 minutes long and is shared with specified contacts.
