Today, the legendary shooter DOOM can be played on almost any device that has a display. You can now view the game via a PDF file.
The cult FPS shooter DOOM, today we will launch it on a lot of unusual devices. The game was originally released in 1993 on MS-DOS platforms, followed a year later by Atari Jaguar, Sega 32X, Mac, SNES and PlayStation. However, time passes very quickly and skilled creators and programming enthusiasts can DOOM run on devices that have nothing to do with games at all.
Today we’re launching DOOM on pretty much anything with a screen. For example, we wrote about a toothbrush, a lawnmower or a payment terminal. But you can also start the game on, for example, a smart alarm clock, an IKEA lamp or a pregnancy test. Now another variant has appeared – DOOM can now launch i PDF file.
Author’s statement
“I used the doomgeneric fork of the original Doom source because it made writing IO quite easy. All I had to do was implement a framebuffer and keyboard inputs. Unlike the previous interactive PDF demos, the output for DoomPDF is achieved by creating a text box for each row of pixels on the screen and then setting their contents to different ASCII characters. This gives me a 6-color monochrome display that can be updated fairly quickly (80ms per frame).”
