Doom on a quantum computer doesn’t look like you’d expect

Because today’s quantum computers are pretty cool. They can’t shake a 30-year-old excavation, that’s a shame!

As we all know, Doom runs on practically everything. On the fridge, on the calculator, in Minecraft, on the camera, just everywhere. But until now, there hasn’t been a port to a quantum computer. The so-called Qunadom (in the link you will find a complete description and how to start the port) spotted by student Luke Mortimer, who is currently studying quantum phenomena at the university. But as he himself admits, there is currently no quantum computer capable of running his code satisfactorily. According to him, such a machine would have to have 72,376 qubits and 80 million logic gates. In comparison, Atom Computing last year he built a machine with 1180 qubits. There is still some catching up to do here.

Aware of the “certain” limitations of current quantum machines, Luke implemented and therefore Quandoom can be run even on current home PCs using the QASM simulator – QASM is a programming language for quantum computers. Well, when you finally launch it, you’ll see something that looks like Atari Battlezone from 1980. Basically just a black and white wireframe. But is it Doom or not? We’d probably prefer to stay on the widespread slow classic PCs for now. Quantum counters still have a long way to go.
