Injury concerns at handball record champions THW Kiel: The HBL club must initially manage without two key players.
According to the “Kieler Nachrichten”, both backcourt player Harald Reinkind and goalkeeper Tomáš Mrkva will be out for a longer period of time. The duo will therefore have to undergo surgery.
Reinkind in particular is likely to be out for a long time. The Norwegian will have to undergo surgery on both heels and will probably not be able to play again this calendar year.
“We will be missing Harald for several months. I don’t think we will see him on the field this calendar year. Our wish was for the operation to take place directly after the season. But Harald really wanted to play at the Olympics,” THW managing director Viktor Szilagyi is quoted as saying by the newspaper.
With Norway, Reinkind was defeated by Slovenia in the quarterfinals at the Olympic Games.
As an athlete and former national player, Szilagyi can understand Reinkind’s decision. “As the managing director of a club, however, you can only place your own interests in this decision, and we have done so clearly,” noted the 45-year-old.
However, THW Kiel does not want to make another move on the transfer market. “We will not be looking for a replacement. We have a large squad and I am convinced that we can compensate for that,” emphasised Szilagyi.
Is Tomáš Mrkva still leaving THW Kiel?
Just like Reinkind, goalkeeper Tomáš Mrkva will undergo surgery on his left knee on Monday. The Czech suffered an injury to his lateral meniscus. It is said that the length of time he will be out of action cannot be determined until after the operation.
However, a longer outage would not be so serious.
With Andreas Wolff, Samir Bellahcene and youngster Leon Nowottny, THW Kiel is finally well positioned in goal.
It is unclear whether Mrkva’s injury will have an impact on a possible transfer, which has recently been speculated about. Bellahcene is also considered a transfer candidate.
