Double weather alert in Romania, between extreme heat and storms over the weekend
- Romania is preparing to face a weekend characterized by extreme weather conditions.
- On the one hand, the intense heat wave we are experiencing will continue to affect many cities.
- On the other hand, several areas are under yellow and orange code alert for strong storms.
From Saturday to Sunday morning, there is a yellow code in Banat, southern Crişana, Oltenia, Transylvania and locally in Maramureş and Muntenia. There will be periods of atmospheric instability. This will be manifested by torrential showers, wind intensifications and, in limited areas, gales (gusts of 50…70 km/h), hail and electrical discharges. In short intervals of time or through accumulation, the water quantities will be 20…25 l/m2 and isolated over 40 l/m2.
Code orange will be, from Saturday, 3:99 p.m., until Sunday, 3:00 a.m., in southern Banat, northwestern Oltenia and southwestern Transylvania.
There will be periods of torrential showers, intensification of the wind and, in limited areas, gales (gusts of 70…90 km/h), hail and electrical discharges. In short time intervals (1…3 hours) or through accumulation, the water quantities will be 25…40 l/sq m and in small areas more than 50…70 l/sq m.
On the other hand, on Saturday in Oltenia, Muntenia and continental Dobrogea the heat wave will persist, the thermal discomfort will be high, and the temperature-humidity index (ITU) will slightly exceed the critical threshold of 80 units.
The maximum temperatures will be 34…37 degrees, and the minimums will not drop below 20 degrees, so they will characterize a tropical night.
Dolj, Olt and Teleorman counties are under orange code. It will be hot, and the maximum temperatures will generally be 37…38 degrees. Thermal discomfort will be accentuated, and the temperature-humidity index (ITU) will exceed the critical threshold of 80 units.
The thermal minimums will not drop below 22 degrees, so they will characterize a tropical night.
On Sunday, the center and east of Muntenia, as well as in continental Dobrogea, fall under a yellow heatwave code.
Thermal discomfort will be high, and the temperature-humidity index (ITU) will exceed the critical threshold of 80 units. The maximum temperatures will be 34…36 degrees, and the minimums will not drop below 20 degrees, so they will characterize a tropical night.
