The Asian boxer says enough after World Boxing questioned her gender suitability: she will not participate in the Sheffield stage, where the Italian team is also present.
He won gold at the last Olympics in boxing, like Imane Khelif. And, just like the Algerian boxer, she ended up at the center of rumors, suspicions and controversies worldwide due to doubts about her gender suitability. The Taiwanese Lin Yu-ting has taken, in agreement with her federation, a sensational decision: she withdrew from the Sheffield World Cup after World Boxing questioned the regularity of her participation in the tournament. In which, incidentally, the Italian team is also registered.
World Boxing, doubts about Lin’s gender suitability
Lin Yu-ting was supposed to fight in the -57 kg category, the same one in which he triumphed in Paris. Too bad that World Boxing, the body founded by the IOC in opposition to the IBAthe International Boxing Federation that had “blocked” in 2022 and 2023 the participation of Lin herself and Khelif in the World Cup for failing a “femininity test,” she expressed doubts about the suitability of the Taiwanese. Yes, the very organization created to restore credibility to boxing, with the aim of keeping it in the Olympic programme.
The Olympic champion under discussion: withdrawal begins
The doubts of World Boxing, evidently, they hurt Lin and the Taiwan Boxing Federation. Which, through a note, underlined: “The newly created organization does not have the clear IOC regulatory policies that ensure the protection of athletes’ rights“. World Boxing which the Taiwanese federation has also joined, like the Italian Fpi and 53 other members. And who, again according to Taipei managers, refused to comply with the boxer’s request.
The government of Taiwan is with Lin: the prime minister’s commitment
Lin, in fact, had offered to undergo one “complete on-site medical examination”. World Boxing, however, did not accept. And after the boxing body’s refusal, Lin, his coach and Taiwanese sports officials decided to give lump sum to avoid further “damage”. An issue that has already become political. The Prime Minister of Taiwan, Cho Jung-tai, said that the island’s government “will actively strive to protect and guarantee Lin’s right to participate in future international competitions“.
