Download! The legendary email client Thunderbird is coming to Android

  • Thunderbird was a popular email client under Mozilla’s wings
  • The developers have promised to release the application for Android
  • Now the final version based on the open source project K-9 Mail is released

Two years ago, he promised a team of developers around an email client Thunderbird app for Android. In September 2024, the beta version was released and now the final version is available for everyone. The application can be downloaded in the Play Store without restrictions.

Thunderbird comes from the same stable as Firefox and was once a very popular thick client. But its glory days have passed with the advent of web clients and quality mobile applications. The Thunderbird team eventually took over the popular open source application K-9 Mail and integrated it into the Thunderbird for Android project.

Thunderbird for Android is also open source and based on performance a protection privacy. Allows you to add additional features such as OpenPGP email encryption to your existing email provider. If you use K-9 Mail, the transition will be simple. Otherwise, just add an account and the app will take care of all the settings. Even my Google Workspace account was able to recognize it without any problems.

Currently, in the Play Store we can find both the beta version of Thunderbird and the final version, as well as K-9 Mail, from which Thunderbird is based. His future fate is uncertain, but we wouldn’t be surprised if he was phased out. In addition to Play, we can also find Thunderbird for download and Githubwhere you can download both the APK file and the source codes.

Will you give the Thunderbird email client a try?
