Dozens of towns affected, thousands of people evacuated


Firefighters intervened, on Sunday, between 07:00 and 20:00, in 35 localities from 16 counties and in Bucharest to remove water from several houses, yards and a public institution, but also to remove dozens of trees collapsed in the context of the forecasted weather phenomena, thousands of people being evacuated/self-evacuated as a precaution.

“In the context of warnings of meteorological phenomena aimed at atmospheric instability, quantitatively significant rains and wind intensifications, on 29.09.2024, in the time interval 07.00 – 20.00, effects were recorded in 35 localities in 16 counties ( Arad, Argeş, Brăila, Braşov, Covasna, Dâmboviţa, Hunedoara, Iasi, Ilfov, Neamţ, Olt, Prahova, Sălaj, Sibiu, Timiș and Vâlcea) and the municipality of Bucharest, where it intervened to evacuate water from 3 houses, 7 yards, 3 cellars, a basement of a block, a public institution and an economic operator warehouse, as well as for the clearing of 25 trees and 2 electricity poles collapsed on the roadway, with 3 vehicles being damaged”, informs, on Sunday evening, the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations ( IGSU).

According to the quoted source, 3,550 people from 19 localities were evacuated preventively/self-evacuated in Galati county, in Vaslui county – 60 people from three localities, and in Braşov county (Budila locality) two people went to relatives/belongings.

“Due to the unfavorable hydro-meteorological conditions, road traffic proceeded with difficulty on a county road (DJ 687/Hunedoara), and at the time of reporting, rail traffic is temporarily stopped on railway section no. 202 (between the locality of Simeria/Hunedoara and the locality of Petroşani/Hunedoara) due to a tree that fell on the contact line”, IGSU also mentions.

To manage these situations, the following measures were ordered:

– the preventive evacuation of people from the risk areas of 25 localities in Galati County (Băneasa, Bălăbăneşti, Bereşti, Bereşti-Meria, Barcea, Corod, Corni, Costache Negri, Cudalbi, Cuza Vodă, Drăguşeni, Fârţăneşti, Folteşti, Frumuşiţa, Griviţa, Jorăşti, Măstăcani, Pechea, Piscu, Slobozia Conachi, Smulţi, Suhurlui, Târgu Bujor, Tudor Vladimirescu and Valea Mărului);

– the intensification of measures to inform the population in flood risk areas regarding the forecasted hydrometeorological phenomena;

– suspension of courses at the level of educational institutions starting from 30.09.2024 in 25 localities (Băneasa, Bălăbăneşti, Bereşti, Bereşti-Meria, Barcea, Corod, Corni, Costache Negri, Cudalbi, Cuza Vodă, Drăguşeni, Fârţăneşti, Folteşti, Frumuşiţa , Griviţa, Jorăşti, Măstăcani, Pechea, Piscu, Slobozia Conachi, Smulţi, Suhurlui, Târgu Bujor, Tudor Vladimirescu and Valea Mărului) from Galati County;

– the execution of works to consolidate the dikes with sandbags at the level of Galati and Vaslui counties, in areas with potential danger, due to deposits and clogging of watercourses as a result of the precipitations and floods manifested in the previous period;

– transmission of forecasts, warnings, notices and information regarding the occurrence of dangerous meteorological/hydro-meteorological phenomena to the competent authorities, in order to arrange the specific measures that are required;

– keeping all categories of means and equipment in operative condition to ensure the response actions, so that, on order, the maneuver of forces and means is carried out in the shortest possible time;

– making a record of vulnerable and disabled people who might need support and adopting preventive measures;

– establishment of permanence at the level of local authorities in areas under warning of dangerous hydrometeorological phenomena;

– field monitoring of the watercourses targeted by the dangerous hydrological warnings/warnings issued;

– the activation of the operative group and the county intervention coordination and management centers, in 29 counties (Alba, Argeş, Bacău, Brăila, Botoşani, Braşov, Buzău, Călăraşi, Constanţa, Covasna, Dâmboviţa, Gorj, Galati, Giurgiu, Hunedoara, Harghita , Ilfov, Ialomiţa, Iasi, Neamţ, Olt, Prahova, Sibiu, Suceava, Tulcea, Teleorman, Vâlcea, Vrancea, Vaslui) and the municipality of Bucharest under Orange Code warning;

– doubling of the effectives at the level of county inspectorates for emergency situations under Orange and Red Code warnings;

– issuance of 6 information messages to the population through the RO-ALERT system in the context of hydrometeorological warnings at the level of 2 counties (Galaţi and Ilfov) and the municipality of Bucharest.

IGSU reminds that, at this moment, more than 1,000 firefighters from the country are supporting the rescuers from ISU Galati.

“Taking into account the meteorological warnings issued by the ANM, we recommend citizens to adopt a preventive behavior, to prevent situations that may endanger their lives and property,” the quoted source said.
