Announced in 2023, Shrek 5 will mark the big return of the famous green ogre in a new animated film. But the weekend started with bad news!

Shrek 5: DreamWorks film changes release date

Launched in 2001, the franchise Shrek immediately met with immense success. One of DreamWorks Animation’s first films, the first Shrek is also one of the greatest successes of the animation studio founded by Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen. Paying homage to fairy tales and classics of European literature, the franchise has to date four films, two spin-offs and a slew of short films. If the first two parts were praised and are today considered cult, the following two films received more mixed opinions. But the license managed to find a second wind in 2022 with Puss in Boots 2: The Last Questwhich is a true gem of animation and writing.

Also, the prospect of a fifth film Shreksixteen years after the release of Shrek: Once Upon an Endwith (why not?) the new animation standards imposed by Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and taken over by DreamWorks in Puss in Boots 2is quite encouraging. In July 2024, the famous animation studio officially announces that Shrek 5 will be released on July 1, 2026 in American theaters, before arriving on October 7 of the same year in France. However, it appears that DreamWorks and its parent company Universal have changed their plans. Indeed, we have just learned that Shrek 5 has been rescheduled to December 23, 2026 in the United States. For now, the new French date has not yet been communicated, but it is possible that we will have to wait until 2027…

Shrek 5

The reason for this change in schedule from Universal and DreamWorks has not been explained, but it is possible that the Hollywood major wishes to avoid that Shrek 5 enters into direct competition with Toy Story 5 from Pixar, scheduled for June 19, 2026. The new adventures of Shrek and Donkey will nevertheless have to compete with Ice Age 6 from the Blue Sky studio (owned by the Disney group since the acquisition of 21st Century Fox in 2019), scheduled for December 18, 2026. Which of the fairy tales or prehistoric creatures will win the public’s support? Your bets! If this article interested you, we recommend that you discover this tragic news: the donkey that inspired Shrek’s donkey recently died, due to this serious illness.
