A drone attack took place on Friday morning in the center of Tel Aviv, a short distance from the headquarters of the US Embassy, reports Haaretz. One person died and several were injured. Airborne alarms have not been activated. The attack was claimed by Houthi rebels. The city of Tel Aviv is on alert following the attack.
The Israeli military initially said it was investigating whether an explosion in central Tel Aviv early Friday was caused by a drone strike. Four people were slightly injured in the explosion. Later, paramedics searching the area near the explosion found the body of a 50-year-old man who had apparently been hit by shrapnel from the explosion.
“Earlier, an explosion rang out in the central area of Tel Aviv. We are looking into reports that it was an aerial target. The incident is being assessed,” the army said in a brief statement.
No air strikes were heard before the blast, which came hours after the Israeli military confirmed it had killed a senior commander of the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia in southern Lebanon.
The explosion took place just a few meters from the US Embassy building in Tel Aviv.
Tel Aviv Police District Commander Peretz Amar said it was not yet clear what caused the explosion in central Tel Aviv at 3:15 a.m. on Friday.
“It seems that the explosion took place at a certain altitude,” said Amar. “We still don’t know what it was,” he added.
Addressing the possibility that the explosion was caused by a drone, Amar said it was “hard to say where it came from”.
“We have testimonies from civilians who talk about a red sphere in the sky, which would explain why the explosion was not in a building or on the ground. These are our first impressions,” he continued.
Later, the spokesman of the Houthi militants in Yemen sent on the X social network that the group will reveal details about a military operation that targeted the city of Tel Aviv.
The mayor of Tel Aviv, Ron Huldai, said on social media that the city is on high alert after the drone attack on Friday morning, in which one person was killed.
